Helping Reduce Underage Tobacco Use We believe the American public expects tobacco companies to help prevent kids from smoking or using any tobacco products. As the largest tobacco manufacturer in the U.S., we believe we should take a lead in this effort.

We believe the American public expects tobacco companies to help prevent kids from smoking or using any tobacco products. As the largest tobacco manufacturer in the U.S., we believe we should take a lead in this effort.
Since 1999, our Youth Smoking Prevention (YSP) department has provided grants to support positive youth development and healthy alternatives for kids. Our grant making is directed to schools, school districts and youth-serving organizations to help them implement life skills education programs, after-school and sports activities, and mentoring youth and youth cessation programs.

Philip Morris USA is proud to support leading youth-serving organizations that offer a variety of out-of-school programs designed to provide youth with:

  • opportunities for character and skill-building
  • structured activities
  • safe environments
  • positive role models
We also support LifeSkills Training, a three-year, in-school, classroom-based substance abuse prevention and competency enhancement program that has been shown to significantly reduce tobacco use through the 12th grade.

These programs can help kids develop confidence and skills that can help them avoid risky behaviors, like smoking.

At the same time, we recognize that some kids do smoke or use other tobacco products and need resources to help them quit. We also provide grants to support youth cessation programs and research.

In addition to grants that provide direct services to youth, the YSP department provides grants to organizations that help them build and sustain their organizations, as well as help advance the field of positive youth development.

Between 1999 and 2007, we provided grants in excess of $200 million.

As part of our grant making during this time period, we provided more than $37 million to schools and school districts in 24 states for the implementation of LifeSkills Training. With our support, more than one million middle-school students have participated in this program.

In 2007, PM USA provided grants to 25 organizations across the U.S. that reached more than 943,000 kids.
